(About JAPAN eVISA)

Q1 : What is JAPAN eVISA?

A1:
JAPAN eVISA is a system that provides a way to apply for a visa online and issue an electronic visa (eVISA) required for entry to Japan.

Q2 : What types of visas can I apply for through JAPAN eVISA?

A2:
Currently, you can apply only for a single-entry short-term stay (up to 90 days) visa for the purpose of tourism.
You must apply for a visa on paper at the Japanese overseas establishment (Japanese Embassy, Consulate-General or Consular Office) for other purposes such as visiting relatives/friends, business, study, work and transit, etc.
Note: Foreign nationals/citizens who are exempt from short-term stay visa don't need to apply for an eVISA. Refer to the URL below to check if you are eligible for entry under the visa exemption arrangements.
https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html

Q3 : What is an electronic visa?

A3:
It is a visa that is issued and recorded electronically. If you apply through JAPAN eVISA, an electronic visa (eVISA) will be issued. You will not have a visa sticker in your passport. When checking in at the port of departure, you will be asked to display a “visa issuance notice” on your device (e.g. smart-phone, tablet) to prove that you have a valid eVISA.
Note: How to display a “visa issuance notice”

Q4 : Am I eligible to apply through JAPAN eVISA?

A4:
JAPAN eVISA is available to all foreign nationals/citizens residing in certain countries, except those exempt from a short-term visa. Please refer to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for the latest information.
https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/visaonline.html
Please also note that only ordinary passport holders are eligible to apply through JAPAN eVISA.

Q5 : How long is an eVISA valid?

A5:
An eVISA is valid for three months after issuance(the expiry date of the eVISA is calculated from the day after the date of issue).
An eVISA is valid for entering Japan on one single occasion. The eVISA becomes invalid once it is used for application for landing at the port of entry. When your eVISA becomes invalid or expires, you will receive a notification email titled “Notification of visa expiration or invalidation” from the system.
Please also note that you (the eVISA holder) must travel to Japan with the same passport you submitted for your application.

Q6 : Can I extend the validity of my eVISA?

A6:
No. The validity of the eVISA cannot be extended.

Q7 : How much is the eVISA fee?

A7:
Visa fee for an eVISA (single-entry visa) is equivalent to 3,000 yen.
However, nationals of some countries/regions are eligible for exemption from or reduction of visa fees under reciprocal arrangements. For more details, please refer to the website of the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over your place of residence.

Q8 : How long does it take to process my eVISA application?

A8:
It normally takes 5 working days for Japanese overseas establishment to examine and issue a visa after receipt of a complete application. Meanwhile, it may take longer during periods of high demands or if the case requires further clarification (e.g. interview, document verification, and additional information) at the Japanese overseas establishment or additional examination by MOFA (Tokyo). In such cases, it may take more than a month to complete visa examination. You are encouraged to submit your application well in advance.
-The examination process doesn't start on the day you submit your application but when the Japanese overseas establishment receives and confirms that your application is complete. Incomplete applications (e.g. missing document and inaccurate information) will not be examined and may be returned or cancelled.
-Applications can be submitted 24/7, but will be accepted by the Japanese overseas establishment during office hours only.
-Some of the Embassies and Consulates are experiencing delays in processing applications due to a large number of applications, many of which are incomplete and not ready for examination.

Q9 : How is my application processed?

A9:
It will be sent to the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over your place of residence.
The Japanese overseas establishment will examine applications one by one whether the applications are provided with all accurate information and required documents.
-Additional documents may be requested on a case-by-case basis.
-An application found to be incomplete may be returned/cancelled.
Once the Japanese overseas establishment has confirmed that your application is complete and ready for examination, they will start processing it.
During examination, you may be requested to visit the Japanese overseas establishment for an interview, document verification, or further information.

Q10 : What are the requirements for visa issuance?

A10:
The requirements are as follows:
(1) The applicant possesses a valid passport and is entitled to re-enter the country/region of his/her nationality/citizenship or residence.
(2) All submitted documents are authentic, complete and satisfactory.
(3) The activities to be engaged in Japan, the civil status or the position of the applicant, and the period of stay meet the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. (Cabinet Order No.319 of 1951. Hereinafter referred to as the "Immigration Control Act")
(4) The applicant does not fall under any of the items listed in Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Immigration Control Act.
A visa will be issued when you meet all the requirements above and if it is considered appropriate to issue a visa.

A11:
The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your planned travel date.

Q12 : I'm leaving for Japan in a few days. Can I request expedited processing?

Q13 : Do you have any advice on how to obtain an eVISA smoothly?

A13:

However, you may be requested to visit the Japanese overseas establishment for an interview or to submit additional documents for examination.

Q15 : I obtained an eVISA. I'm travelling to Japan after passing through several countries. Can I go to Japan from a port of departure outside of my country?

A15:

Q36 : What are the advantages of family application?

A36:
There are mainly three advantages as follows:
- Once a principal applicant(JAPAN eVISA account holder) has entered all the required information for visa application, some of the principal applicant's information will be automatically copied to the application forms of the accompanying family members. The fields to be copied include: arrival/departure date, name of ship or airline, arrival/departure port, applicant's contact details, name/phone number/address of accommodation
- The principal applicant will receive all notification emails regarding family members' application progress.
- The principal applicant will receive a notification of the total amount of visa fees for all family members. Please pay the visa fees all at once. (One payment for all family members )

Q37 : How can I apply as a family?

A37:
First, choose a principal applicant who will make applications for all family members (the principal applicant must create a JAPAN eVISA account if he/she doesn't have one).
Before applying, you (a principal applicant) should collect the application information for all family members including passport information and photo.
Then, you will register applications for all family members and submit them together all at once.

Q38 : How should I apply as a family through JAPAN eVISA?

A38:
When you (a principal applicant) complete your application, “Save and add family members” button will appear on the ”Check the registration of the visa application” page. By clicking the button, the application will be saved, and the screen will be redirected to the page for making an application for other family members. Once you have finished registering the last application, click “Save and finish your entries” to complete the registration of family application.
In the “Visa application list”, you can view all the applications you have registered as a family application. Select the application of the principal applicant and click “Submit” to submit the applications for all family members.

Q39 : Do I have to register applications for all family members at the same time when applying as a family?

A39:
Yes. You(a principal applicant)must register applications for all family members at the same time.
Once an entry is completed or interrupted, other family members cannot be added later. If you have completed or interrupted a “Family application” and wish to add other family members to the application, you must start over from the first person.

Q40 : Who is considered as a family?

A40:
Family member includes relatives living in the same region under the jurisdiction of the Japanese overseas establishment to which the application will be submitted. Family members applying as a family must travel together to Japan on the same itinerary.

It may take longer than usual to issue an eVISA depending on circumstances.

FAQ: https://kokopass.jp/mofa/#faq_english

Q47 : Can someone else pay for my visa fee?

A47:
No. You must pay your visa fee by your credit card. In principle, the applicant and the credit card holder must be the same person. As an exception, payments can be made by the applicant's legal representative (parent, guardian, etc.) when there are enough reasons, such as the applicant being a minor. In this case, the credit card holder must complete the entire payment procedure himself/herself, as the applicant and the credit card holder are different.

If you don't have a credit card, please apply for a visa in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over your place of residence.
